The Effects of Education of Communication on Perceptual Orientation, Self-Efficacy, Narcissism, and Interpersonal Relationship in Nursing College Students

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on how much the Perceptual orientation, self-efficacy, narcissism, and interpersonal relationship are improved by education of communication.
Methods: This study design was a one group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected from March 8, 2006 to June 15, 2006. In order to get the data by questionnaire, 65 subject were participated to study at first, but only 62 subjects were selected finally. 15 times of communication education were applied about communication-theory, self-awareness and self-understanding, clarify of identification, therapeutic interpersonal relationship, therapeutic communication technique, interpersonal conflict resolution strategy, communication technique for each situation, and role play.
Results: There was statistically significant difference in satisfaction(t=-2.35, p=.022) and sensitivity(t=-2.28, p=.026) in interpersonal relationship after receiving communication education. but there were no statistical difference in narcissism, self-efficacy, and perceptual orientation between before-education and post-education even thought their mean scores were improved. There were statistically differences in understanding before education(t=2.48, p=.016), communication after education(t=2.12, p=.038) according to living together of general characteristics. There were statistically differences in communication after education(t=2.26, p=.027), sensitivity before education(t=2.46, p=.017), understanding after education(t=2.24, p=.029) according to residence. But there were no statistical difference according to age, religion in interpersonal relationship.
Conclusion: As a result, this study suggests that education of communication have effect on satisfaction and sensitivity in interpersonal relationship. Therefore, it is recommended to study for accurate effect on education of communication which is included control group. In future, further studies with a small sample size are needed for the best result.
